Morocco drew 1-1 against Mali this Sunday at the Grand Stadium of Tangier, after a match in which the Lions of the Atlas led for a long time before conceding in the second half.
Mali quickly imposed a strong physical presence and created the first alert as early as the 3rd minute, forcing Yassine Bounou to intervene. Morocco then gradually took control of the match.
Ismael Saibari had a first chance in the 19th minute after good work from Ayyoub Bouaddi, before Azzedine Ounahi and Neil El Aynaoui also tried their luck.
The Moroccan dominance was finally rewarded in the 32nd minute. Abdessamad Ezzalzouli took advantage of a hesitation from the Malian defense and earned a penalty. Abde converted it despite an intervention from Samassa, who had touched the ball.
The Lions could have extended their lead before the break, particularly through Ounahi, but they lacked precision in the final touch.
Upon returning from the locker room, Mali played higher and was cleaner in ball circulation. However, Morocco continued to create chances, notably through El Khannouss in the 61st minute, but Samassa remained alert.
From the hour mark, the Malians became increasingly dangerous. Bounou had to intervene on a superb shot from Adama Camara in the 71st minute.
The equalizer finally came five minutes later. From a free kick following a foul by El Khannouss, Amadou Dante found Diarra in the box. The Malian forward deceived Bounou with a superb volley to bring both teams level.
Morocco will regret its lack of efficiency and several technical inaccuracies. The Lions had the opportunities to secure the win but allowed Mali to come back into a match they seemed to be controlling.
