Maroan Sannadi was set to reclaim a starting position on Wednesday night with Athletic Club. The Moroccan forward had been chosen to start at the forefront of the Basque attack against Levante during the 6th round of La Liga, before the match was ultimately postponed just minutes before kickoff.
Scheduled for 9:30 PM at the Ciutat de València, the match could not take place due to heavy rains that fell on the city. After an inspection of the pitch by the refereeing team and LaLiga, the field was deemed unplayable. Athletic Club confirmed that the weather conditions and the state of the grass did not allow for the match to proceed under normal circumstances.
This postponement comes at a bad time for Sannadi. The Moroccan was set to experience his first starting appearance of the season in the league after primarily being used as a substitute since the beginning of the campaign. He had notably played around thirty minutes against Sevilla during the second round, and then ten minutes against Elche last weekend.
The 25-year-old player is still looking to regain full rhythm after a physically challenging period. Having undergone surgery on the meniscus of his right knee last season, Sannadi was then hindered this summer by a new injury, this time affecting the proximal tibiofibular joint of his left knee. Nevertheless, he returned to competition as early as August.
The new date for Levante-Athletic has not yet been announced. In the meantime, Sannadi will have another opportunity to claim playing time on Saturday when Athletic hosts Deportivo Alavés at San Mamés.
