Kylian Mbappé keeps the ambiguity around the African Champion: “There’s Morocco too”

Kylian Mbappé made a remark that should not go unnoticed. Invited this Thursday evening on M6, the captain of the French team spoke about the upcoming opponent for Les Bleus in the World Cup, Senegal, while referencing Morocco.

When asked about France’s ambitions in this World Cup and the upcoming match against the Lions of Teranga, the French forward first emphasized the importance of such a matchup. “The World Cup is about matches that excite, we are playing against the African champion,” he stated, before humorously adding, “I don’t know if it’s them or not, by the way, since there’s Morocco too. We’ll stay out of that.”

A brief comment, accompanied by laughter, but one that is sure to provoke reactions. By mentioning Morocco while discussing the African champion, Mbappé reminded, whether intentionally or not, of the ongoing debate surrounding the continental title awarded to the Atlas Lions.

For Moroccan supporters, this statement will likely not go unnoticed, especially since Morocco is officially the African champion. A challenge has indeed been filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport by the Senegalese Federation, but to date, it is the Atlas Lions who wear the second star and the continental crown.
