The former Algerian international Djamel Benlamri has been particularly complimentary about the Atlas Lions following their victory against Lesotho (2-0) on Tuesday, during the second round of the CAN 2027 qualifiers. Appearing on the beIN Sports set, the former defender notably highlighted the evolution of Moroccan football since the arrival of Mohamed Ouahbi.
“The Moroccan team was strong under Hoalid Regragui, but it has become even stronger and more enjoyable to watch with Mohamed Ouahbi,” Benlamri stated. The 2019 African champion believes that the new coach has managed to bring his own identity while maintaining the achievements built over the past few years.
The Algerian consultant particularly focused on the tactical organization of the Atlas Lions. He emphasized the players’ movements, their collective organization, and the various choices made with the ball. “They execute tactical sequences that you only see in top teams,” he pointed out. Benlamri considers that Morocco now displays a style of play comparable, in certain phases, to that observed in several major European and global nations.
Without undermining the work done previously by Hoalid Regragui, Benlamri believes that Mohamed Ouahbi has advanced Morocco technically. “Ouahbi has brought his touch, with excellent continuity for Morocco and very good progress,” he added. This analysis comes after another success for the Atlas Lions, who defeated Gabon and then Lesotho by the same score of 2-0, now boasting a perfect record with six points after the first two rounds of qualifying.
