Held to a draw by Mali (1-1) on Friday, December 26, in Rabat, Morocco still saw one of its midfielders rewarded: Naël El Aynaoui was named “TotalEnergies CAF Man of the Match” by the African Football Confederation. This choice highlights the importance of his work in midfield during a match marked by two penalties and a tense scenario until the end.
In a match where the Atlas Lions sought to impose their tempo, El Aynaoui made an impact with his reading of second balls, his ability to position himself between the lines, and to secure the build-up, especially when the Malian block became denser. The context makes this distinction even more significant: this draw halted Morocco’s streak of 19 consecutive victories, proving that collective mastery was not enough to make a difference, despite several clear chances at the end of the match.
Even before this encounter, the midfielder had expressed a discourse focused on the demands and responsibilities towards the public, explaining that the team wanted to “make the people proud” and aim for a good result against Mali. His Man of the Match trophy further confirms his growing status in Hoalid Regragui’s rotation, at a time when Morocco needs to quickly convert dominance into clear victories to secure the top spot in the group.
