Villarreal has made a decision regarding the future of Ilias Akhomach. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish club has informed the Moroccan international that they are counting on him this season. Under contract until June 2028, the 22-year-old winger is expected to remain with the Yellow Submarine, definitively ruling out the possibility of a move to Espanyol.
The Catalan club had identified Akhomach as one of their main targets to strengthen their wings, alongside Bryan Zaragoza. Previously courted by Espanyol last January, the Moroccan ultimately chose to join Rayo Vallecano on loan. He played 16 matches there, scored one goal, and provided one assist, while reaching the final of the Conference League under the guidance of Íñigo Pérez.
Now the coach of Villarreal, the Spanish technician continues to place his trust in his former player. Akhomach made his return on August 8, coming on in the 72nd minute against Galatasaray during a 2-1 victory. He also replaced Nicolas Pépé in the 77th minute of the 2-2 draw against Racing Santander on Sunday, during the first matchday of La Liga.
These early appearances confirm that Akhomach will be part of Villarreal’s rotation. He is expected to primarily compete with Nicolas Pépé for the right side of the attack. Espanyol will now have to look for other options to strengthen their offensive line.
