The transfer saga of Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd to Real Sociedad took an unexpected turn. While the defender seemed close to rejoining the Basque club, the operation ultimately fell through, according to information from the French media outlet Foot Mercato.
Negotiations between Olympique de Marseille and Real Sociedad had reportedly reached a definitive agreement for the loan of the Moroccan defender to the Spanish club, accompanied by a non-mandatory purchase option. The official announcement of the operation seemed to be just a matter of time.
However, according to Foot Mercato, the situation took a sudden turn: Aguerd ultimately decided against joining Real Sociedad after discussions with the team’s coach, Pellegrino Matarazzo.
Journalist Santi Aouna provided further details on platform X. The disagreement reportedly centered on the timeline for the Moroccan defender’s return. The Real Sociedad coach had asked him to be able to play eight full matches of 90 minutes starting in September.
According to the same source, this scenario does not align with the medical protocol established for Aguerd following his long absence. His return must be gradual, starting with 30 minutes of play, then 60, before he can participate in a full match.
The journalist also stated that the Moroccan defender would return to the pitch during the month of August, either under the colors of Olympique de Marseille or another club. Therefore, the issue would not be related to his physical condition, but rather the necessity to respect the various stages of his recovery.
Aguerd’s return to San Sebastián was, however, very well received. The Moroccan defender had already worn the colors of Real Sociedad during the 2024-2025 season, as part of a loan from West Ham United, leaving a positive impression on supporters and the coaching staff.
After the failure of his return to Real Sociedad at the last moment, Nayef Aguerd’s future remains open to several possibilities. Several clubs continue to show interest in his services, as they await news of his next destination in the coming days.
