It is now confirmed: Ismael Saibari will not play in the quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup between Morocco and France. Injured during the Atlas Lions’ victory against Canada, the Moroccan international has not recovered sufficiently to participate in this major match at Gillette Stadium in Boston.
Mohamed Ouahbi officially announced his absence at a press conference. “He is not ready, but I hope this is not the end of the tournament for him,” said the national coach. This statement confirms the player’s unavailability for this clash against the Blues, while leaving the door open for the remainder of the competition in case of Moroccan qualification.
Saibari had left the match against Canada prematurely after feeling discomfort in his thigh. Initially, Ouahbi mentioned “a slight pain” and a “minor pull,” before further examinations were scheduled to assess the injury more accurately. His absence from the last training sessions had already heightened doubts about his availability.
This absence represents a significant loss for Morocco. Saibari was one of the most influential players in Morocco’s journey in this World Cup. He scored in all three group stage matches and also converted a decisive penalty during the shootout against the Netherlands. His activity, ability to push forward, and effectiveness in dangerous areas had added an extra dimension to the offensive play of the Lions.
Without him, Mohamed Ouahbi will need to adapt his offensive strategy without disrupting the balance of his team. Soufiane Rahimi, who already came on against Canada and scored late in the match, appears to be a credible option to bring depth, energy, and impact. The Moroccan coach can also rely on the versatility of his squad to compensate for this absence.
