The 2026 World Cup confirms the spectacular progress of African football. For the first time in the tournament’s history, nine teams from the continent are advancing beyond the group stage, an unprecedented figure that illustrates the growing strength of African football at the highest level.

Morocco will indeed be present at the Round of 16, alongside Senegal, Ghana, Egypt, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Cape Verde, Algeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Of the ten African representatives in this edition, only Tunisia has exited the competition in the first round.

This achievement comes in a particular context, that of the first World Cup featuring 48 teams, with the introduction of an additional round before the knockout stage. But beyond the expanded format, the African teams have primarily secured their place on the pitch, achieving sufficient results to reach the knockout phase.

For Moroccan football, this presence in the final bracket is part of a positive momentum on the global stage. The Atlas Lions, already anticipated after their recent international performances, will now have the opportunity to confirm their status against the Netherlands in a highly anticipated clash in Monterrey.

This edition also sends a strong signal for the entire continent. Africa is no longer content with having a few isolated representatives in the knockout rounds. It is now arriving in numbers, with diverse profiles, competitive generations, and teams capable of competing with the best nations.

With nine teams still in contention, African football is entering a new dimension. The challenge now will be to transform this historic presence into significant journeys, as the Round of 16 promises to be a true test to measure the continent’s ambitions in this 2026 World Cup.
