U20 AFCON 2025: Ivory Coast Withdraws from Hosting the Tournament

With only a few weeks to go before the kick-off, Ivory Coast has officially withdrawn from hosting the U20 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place from April 26 to May 18, 2025. The decision was announced by the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) in a statement addressed to the African Football Confederation (CAF).

Designated by CAF to host the tournament, Ivory Coast ultimately decided to withdraw due to a decision made by its government. Yacine Idriss Diallo, president of the FIF and the Local Organizing Committee for the U20 AFCON (COCAN U20), formalized this announcement, stating that the Ivorian federation informed CAF as early as March 25, 2025.

“By official letter, the Government notified the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) of Ivory Coast’s withdrawal as host country for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations. In accordance with the instructions of the President of the FIF, the Executive Director communicated this information to the Secretary General of the African Football Confederation (CAF).”

The statement also expresses the FIF’s gratitude to all parties involved in the tournament’s preparations and assures that information will be communicated based on decisions taken by CAF.

This late withdrawal places CAF in a difficult situation, forcing the organization to quickly find a new host country. With a schedule already set and teams engaged in their preparations, the confederation will need to respond promptly to ensure the tournament can proceed smoothly.

It remains to be seen which country will be able to meet the logistical and organizational requirements within such a short timeframe. CAF is expected to communicate soon regarding the alternatives being considered to maintain this edition of the U20 AFCON.
