Sporting CP is not rushing the debut of Moncef Zekri. Arriving this summer from KV Mechelen, the young Moroccan left-back, 17 years old, is currently following an individual program aimed at helping him regain optimal physical condition before fully integrating into the first team.
Absent from the club’s recent matches, Zekri is working in the gym and receiving specific monitoring. Rui Borges recently explained that this management is related to a minor injury sustained before his arrival in Portugal. “We are working individually with him. He is coming back from a minor injury and he is doing well, but we need to be patient to have him at 200%, not 100%,” said the Sporting coach.
Portuguese media indicate that Sporting hopes to fully reintegrate the U17 Moroccan international after the next international break. The goal is to allow Zekri to compete for his first official minutes in his new colors, without rushing his physical recovery process.
Signed on August 25, Moncef Zekri has committed to Sporting until 2029. The Portuguese club has set his release clause at 80 million euros and considers him a true investment for the future at the left-back position. Rui Borges also emphasized that the Moroccan was Sporting’s priority among the various profiles studied this summer.
Africa U17 champion with Morocco in 2025, Zekri had already experienced professional football in Belgium despite his young age. He will now have to wait a few more weeks before he can truly embark on his adventure with the Lions of Lisbon.
