Soufiane Boufal has chosen an unexpected destination to continue his career. Free since his departure from Le Havre, the Moroccan international has signed with Ittihad Tripoli. Several local media outlets report a two-season contract, although the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.
This decision may come as a surprise given the 32-year-old’s European experience and career path. After playing in France, England, Spain, Belgium, and Qatar, Boufal will discover the Libyan league for the first time, and more broadly, club football in Africa.
Arriving at Le Havre last January to help with the relegation battle, the Atlas Lion left the Normandy club at the end of the season. He played 17 Ligue 1 matches, scored one goal, and provided four assists before regaining his contractual freedom.
Trained at Angers and having notably played for Lille, Southampton, Celta Vigo, Al-Rayyan, and Union Saint-Gilloise, Boufal brings solid experience to Ittihad Tripoli. With 18 championship titles, the club holds the national record and has significant ambitions. This surprising destination should now allow the 2022 World Cup semi-finalist to regularly return to competition after several months without a club.
