Rafik El Arguioui did not hide his joy after being called up for the first time to the Morocco U23 team. The 21-year-old midfielder spoke to ESPN on Saturday, following the 1-1 draw between SC Cambuur and ADO Den Haag, reflecting on his reaction upon learning of his call-up.
“I was super happy, I shared the news with my parents, and they were thrilled as well,” El Arguioui confided. Having already been part of Morocco’s youth teams, including the U20s, the Cambuur player is now ready to take a new step in the national jersey.
The Moroccan midfielder is already looking forward to the upcoming gathering with enthusiasm. “I will play two important matches and I am delighted with this opportunity. I am grateful to have it,” he explained. El Arguioui will join the group led by Jamel Aït Ben Idir, which will play two friendly matches against Mali on October 1 and then Tanzania on October 5.
Having scored four goals in seven Eredivisie matches since the start of the season, El Arguioui arrives with the Atlas Lions U23 with the ambition to confirm his good form. “I hope to be able to show my potential and progress from there,” he added. This first call-up thus offers him the opportunity to gradually settle in with the Moroccan U23s as the next continental challenges approach.
