Ouahbi responds to Amrabat: “The past gives respect, not privileges”

Mohamed Ouahbi spoke this Thursday about the situation of Sofyan Amrabat, just days after the Moroccan midfielder decided to make himself unavailable for the Atlas Lions as long as the current coach remains in position. In front of the media, the Moroccan coach emphasized the importance of the player in the recent history of the national team while defending his sporting choices.

“Amrabat is someone who has given a lot to the national team, someone very important who has been part of Morocco’s great adventures. We must not take that away from him,” Ouahbi stated, adding that “there is no conflict between Amrabat, myself, or the staff.” The coach also acknowledged that a reduction in playing time can be difficult for a player used to holding an important position with the Atlas Lions.

However, Ouahbi was very clear regarding the management of statuses within his group: “The past gives you respect, not privileges.” For the coach, past performances cannot guarantee a place in the starting eleven or a call-up. Current form, competitiveness, and playing time at the club remain among the criteria used to make his choices. “The problem for the player is the playing time,” he explained.

Nevertheless, the coach has not completely closed the door on a return for Sofyan Amrabat. His principle remains the same for all internationals: no place is guaranteed, and everyone must prove themselves on the field to be included in the group. This position allows Ouahbi to uphold his guiding principles while maintaining respect for one of the key figures in the significant campaigns of recent years.
