Noussair Mazraoui regained a starting position this Thursday evening during Manchester United’s victory against Sabah FK (4-0) at Old Trafford, in the first match of the Champions League. Positioned on the right side of the defense by Michael Carrick, the Moroccan international played the entire match and contributed to the clean sheet for the Red Devils.
Manchester United made the difference even before halftime. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 27th minute, before Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead in the 42nd. Benjamin Šeško then brought the score to 3-0 just before halftime, while Lisandro Martínez scored the fourth goal in the 68th minute. The Mancunians thus made a perfect return to the Champions League after two years of absence.
In a match largely controlled by his team, Mazraoui mainly fulfilled his defensive duties. However, his performance was deemed rather subdued by the English press. The Sun rated him 6/10, noting that the Moroccan still showed some signs of lacking rhythm and did not contribute enough in the final third to truly challenge Diogo Dalot in the hierarchy.
This starting position remains important for Mazraoui, who had played little in the Premier League this season until now. Before this European match, he had totaled only 98 minutes in three league appearances, with just one start, averaging 6.4/10 on FotMob. The Moroccan full-back will now aim to build on this as Manchester United prepares to face Manchester City in the Manchester derby.
