Montpellier continues to show signs of revival in Ligue 1. Following their impressive win against Monaco, Jean-Louis Gasset’s side maintained their momentum with a 2-1 victory this Sunday at the Stadium against Toulouse, home to Zakaria Aboukhlal. The Moroccan international, who is chasing his 7th goal of the season, remains goalless in Ligue 1 since the match against RC Lens in Matchday 16.
Despite a first half dominated by Toulouse, which saw them lead at the break, Montpellier turned the game around in the second half. Defender Modibo Sagnan first leveled the score with an unstoppable header shortly after the hour mark. But it was Othmane Maamma who ultimately changed the course of the match. Coming off the bench in the 60th minute, the Moroccan forward scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute with a crisp strike that left the Toulouse goalkeeper with no chance.
This was Maamma’s first goal in Ligue 1, adding to the assist he had already provided earlier this season. Khalil Fayad, another Moroccan player, also came on at the hour mark, bringing additional energy to Montpellier’s midfield.
With this victory, Montpellier inches closer to safety. Now sitting on 19 points, the MHSC is just two points behind Stade Rennais, currently 16th in the standings. This positive momentum could reignite their hopes of avoiding relegation and securing their place in Ligue 1 for next season.
