Eliesse Ben Seghir is gradually continuing his return to competition. The Moroccan international participated on Friday in Bayer Leverkusen’s resounding victory against Fortuna Köln (6-0) during a friendly match played behind closed doors during the international break.
The young Lion of the Atlas was brought on in the second half by Carles Martínez. Jonas Hofmann, Victor Boniface, and several young players from the training center also got playing time during the last 45 minutes.
Leverkusen had already made the difference before halftime by scoring four goals. Martin Terrier and Patrik Schick each netted a brace, while Nathan Tella and Miguel Gutiérrez completed the score. Ben Seghir did not directly participate in any of his team’s six goals.
Ben Seghir continues to build momentum
This appearance, however, marks another step for the Moroccan, whose start to the season has been disrupted by physical issues. Suffering from a thigh injury during the summer, Ben Seghir had to wait until September 16 to make his first official appearance of the season in the Europa League against Celje.
A slight muscle discomfort then slowed his progress. His presence on Friday against Fortuna Köln allows him to accumulate new minutes and gradually regain his rhythm.
This management is also in line with the objective set by Carles Martínez during this long international break. The Bayer coach explained that this match was intended to help his players maintain their rhythm ahead of the league’s resumption.
Leverkusen will return to the Bundesliga on Saturday, October 10, with a home match against Mainz. Ben Seghir will now aim to continue his upward trajectory and gradually secure a more significant role in the German club’s rotation.
