Despite Canada’s elimination against Morocco in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, Jesse Marsch defended his players’ performance. After a 3-0 defeat to the Atlas Lions, the Canadian coach delivered an analysis marked by frustration but also by great pride in his group.

In the post-match press conference, Marsch stated that Canada had played a match true to its identity. According to him, his team managed to impose intensity, press high, and seek to hurt Morocco, without abandoning its offensive principles. The American coach particularly lamented his players’ lack of success during crucial moments of the match.

“We were the best team. We were better than Morocco in the first half, we were better in the second half. We were unlucky not to take the lead,” he declared, believing that the final score did not fully reflect the content of the match.

However, Jesse Marsch refused to reduce Canada’s performance to the result. Despite the defeat, the coach expressed his pride in his group, even stating: “I’d rather be us than them. No matter how good the Moroccan team is, I’d rather be us. I am really proud of our guys.”

Canada indeed tried to take control of the match, particularly through its aggressive pressing and willingness to play forward. But against a more clinical Moroccan team, the Canadians ultimately paid for their lack of efficiency. Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring in the 50th minute, before doubling his tally in the 82nd. Soufiane Rahimi then sealed the Moroccan victory in stoppage time.

For Canada, the adventure ends in the Round of 16. But Jesse Marsch wanted to highlight his team’s attitude, courage, and commitment to staying true to their game until the end, despite a night that ultimately proved cruel against a more clinical Morocco in decisive moments.
