Souffian El Karouani did not miss his first start under the colors of Benfica. Starting on the left side of the defense against AC Milan on Wednesday night at San Siro, the Moroccan international was decisive in the Portuguese club’s 2-0 victory in the first match of the Europa League group stage.
After Dodi Lukébakio opened the scoring in the 16th minute, El Karouani directly contributed to the second goal for Lisbon. In the 54th minute, the Moroccan full-back delivered a cross into the box for Jakub Kamiński, allowing the Pole to double the lead and secure Benfica’s advantage. This was a particularly important first assist for the Moroccan in his new colors.
Very active in his lane, El Karouani also caused several problems for the Milan defense. He was a starter for the first time with Benfica after having played only a few minutes in the league since his arrival, and he ultimately left the pitch at the very end of the match, substituted in the 88th minute.
Arriving at Benfica in early September on loan from Al-Qadsiah, the 25-year-old comes off a particularly productive 2025-2026 season with Utrecht. The left-back finished that season with 4 goals and 18 assists in 50 matches, marking the best offensive record of his career. These statistics highlighted his crossing ability and his contribution in the final third.
With this convincing performance at San Siro and a first assist in his first start, El Karouani is off to an ideal start in his adventure with Benfica.
