Neil El Aynaoui began his Champions League journey with Leipzig with a heavy defeat against Como (4-1) on Thursday night, during the opening match of both teams in the competition.
Starting in midfield for Leipzig, Neil El Aynaoui struggled to make an impact during the match. The German club generally found it difficult to impose its game against a more effective Como team, which took advantage of the spaces left and the defensive errors of their opponents.
Neil El Aynaoui also did not display his best defensive qualities. Usually valuable in ball recovery and maintaining midfield balance, the Moroccan was unable to exert enough influence in these areas against Como. His impact remained limited in a match where the Italian club dictated the pace for long stretches.
After heading into the locker room two goals down, Leipzig attempted to respond after the break but conceded a third goal scored by Assane Diao in the 54th minute. Andrija Maksimović reduced the deficit four minutes later, but it did not allow the Germans to truly revive the match. Máximo Perrone ultimately sealed Como’s victory by scoring the fourth goal in the 90th minute.
This heavy 4-1 defeat marks a serious setback for Leipzig at the start of their European campaign, as the German club hoped to begin the competition more convincingly. For his part, Neil El Aynaoui will need to quickly regain more impact and show a better level in the upcoming matches.
