Yassine Bounou returned to his position in goal for Al-Hilal this Saturday against Al-Taawoun, just days after being forced to withdraw at the last minute against Neom. This return coincides with a new victory for the Saudi club, as their only defeat in the league this season occurred in the absence of their Moroccan goalkeeper.
Initially set to start against Neom on September 7, Bounou felt pain in his hamstrings during warm-up. Mohammed Al-Owais had to replace him on short notice, and Al-Hilal lost 2-0 at home. The Moroccan then underwent treatment before returning to normal training on Friday, the day before the trip to Al-Taawoun.
His return also highlights a significant statistic. In his first five starts in the Saudi Pro League this season, Bounou consistently led Al-Hilal to victory: 4-2 against Al-Faisaly, 3-0 against Al-Fayha, 5-1 against Al-Khaleej, 3-0 against Al-Ahli, and 2-0 against Al-Shabab. He notably achieved three clean sheets during this streak.
His performances were rewarded in early September when Bounou received the award for best goalkeeper of the league for the month of August. The club highlighted his performances and his clean sheets against Al-Fayha and Al-Ahli.
The brief absence against Neom remains, for now, the only league match lost by Al-Hilal this season, and it took place without their last line of defense, the Moroccan. Back between the posts against Al-Taawoun, Bounou once again underscores his importance in the balance of Simone Inzaghi’s team.
