Arab Cup 2025: The Atlas Lions held to a draw by Oman

Morocco and Oman played to a stalemate (0-0) on Friday, December 5, during the group stage of the Arab Cup, in a match where the Atlas Lions dominated for long stretches without finding the net. From the outset, Tarik Sektioui’s men set the pace and launched multiple attacks, but were met with a well-organized Omani defense. Successive attempts by El Karti and Hamdallah, including a clear chance in the 38th minute, were not enough to break the deadlock despite a first half that was completely controlled.

Upon returning from the break, the match balanced out, and Oman became more threatening, particularly with a direct free kick that was confidently saved by Benabid. The turning point of the match came quickly: Hamdallah was sent off after a dangerous play, leaving Morocco to play with one less player for over thirty minutes. This scenario forced the Atlas Lions to reassess their approach while maintaining an offensive intent despite the disadvantage.

Oman tried to take advantage of this numerical superiority in the last quarter of an hour, intensifying their attacks and occupying more of the Moroccan half. However, the Moroccan defense remained solid and disciplined, repelling the opposing offensives and avoiding the trap of a match that was becoming increasingly tactical. Morocco, for its part, missed several opportunities to take the lead, lacking precision in the final third.

After a stoppage time without any real excitement, the two teams ultimately parted ways with a logical but frustrating draw for the Atlas Lions, whose initial dominance went unrewarded. This result leaves more points to be contested in the remainder of the competition.
