Ali Maamar stood out on Wednesday during Anderlecht’s defeat to Olympique Lyonnais (1-2) in the opening match of the Europa League group stage. Starting on the right flank, the Moroccan international provided the assist for the only goal scored by the Brussels club.
Trailing by two goals after just 22 minutes, Anderlecht showed a different face after the break. In the 61st minute, Maamar won the ball high up the pitch before delivering an accurate cross to Mihajlo Cvetković. The Serbian forward headed the ball in to bring his team back to 1-2 and reignite the match.
Very active in his lane, the Moroccan regularly supported Anderlecht’s attacks. He recorded a total of ten crosses, four of which found a teammate, and created a significant chance. Anderlecht notably increased their pressure in the second half, holding 66% possession after the break, but they were unable to find the net again.
At 21 years old, Ali Maamar continues to gain experience at the highest European level. Capable of playing on both sides of the defense, the Anderlecht-trained player is progressing and confirming his growing importance in the Belgian club’s squad.
