On Monday, January 27, the final draw for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) took place at the Mohammed V National Theater in Rabat at 7:00 PM (local time), with representatives from the 24 qualified teams present. This eagerly awaited edition, which will be held in Morocco, provided fans with a preview of the upcoming clashes between Africa’s national teams.

The 24 teams were divided into six groups of four, and Morocco, as the host country, was automatically placed at the top of Group A. The defending champions, Côte d’Ivoire, also enjoyed privileged status, being placed in Pot 1 alongside Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria.

Here is the composition of the groups following the draw:

Group A: Morocco, Mali, Zambia, Comoros

Group B: Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe

Group C: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania

Group D: Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, Botswana

Group E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan

Group F: Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique

Walid Regragui, the national coach, expressed his optimism after the draw:

“I believe we are going to organize the best AFCON in history here in Morocco.”

The draw set up some interesting matchups, with Morocco placed in a relatively balanced group but not without challenges. The team, led by Walid Regragui, who will have the advantage of playing at home, will face tough competition from Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, all teams on the rise on the continental stage.

With strong popular support and solid performances in recent years, Morocco is determined to deliver an unforgettable spectacle. The competition, full of passion and excitement, could mark the beginning of a historic new chapter for Moroccan football.
