At just 17 years old, Abdellah Ouazane has taken a significant step forward in his young career. The Ajax Amsterdam player made his first appearance with the Moroccan national team on Friday night against Gabon, during the Lions of the Atlas’ victory (2-0) in the opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Called up for the first time by Mohamed Ouahbi for this September gathering, the young Moroccan donned the Lions’ jersey after notably shining with youth selections. This is a particularly rapid progression for someone who played a major role in Morocco’s triumph at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament in which he was named the best player.
His appearance against the Gabonese Panthers also solidifies his international choice. After representing both the Netherlands and Morocco at youth levels, Ouazane recently confirmed his desire to continue his journey with the Lions of the Atlas. “I have made my choice for Morocco,” the Ajax player stated at the end of August.
This first appearance comes as Ouazane is experiencing a remarkable rise at his club. Integrated into the Ajax first team, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder has gradually gained playing time since the start of the season and is already attracting the attention of several major European clubs.
By giving him his first minutes with the senior team against Gabon, Mohamed Ouahbi also confirms his intention to gradually integrate young Moroccan talents into his new project. For Ouazane, this evening in Rabat will especially be remembered as his first steps among the Lions of the Atlas.
