Sofyan Amrabat announced on Tuesday that he would no longer make himself available for the Moroccan national team as long as Mohamed Ouahbi remains at the helm of the Atlas Lions. In a statement published on Instagram, the Ajax midfielder described the decision as “very difficult” and stated that he no longer feels capable of continuing under the current coach’s orders.
The Moroccan international did not wish to disclose the specific reasons for his choice. “Out of respect for the team and the people involved, I prefer to keep the reasons for this decision to myself,” he explained. Amrabat also emphasized that representing Morocco is “the greatest honor” of his career and assured that he has always given his all since his first call-up twelve years ago.
The 30-year-old player, however, insists on one essential point: he is not definitively ending his international career. “I want to be clear: I am not retiring and I am not closing the door on a return with Morocco,” the Ajax player highlighted. His step back is therefore directly linked to Mohamed Ouahbi’s continued position.
Amrabat finally wished good luck to his teammates and the entire staff, while assuring that he would remain the Atlas Lions’ number one supporter. He also thanked the Moroccan public for their affection and support. During the last World Cup, the former Manchester United player participated in three matches, two of which were as a substitute. He now has 78 caps with Morocco.
