Benfica Lisbon officially announced the arrival of Souffian El Karouani on Tuesday. The Moroccan international is on loan until the end of the season from Al-Qadsiah, with an option to buy. The 25-year-old left-back will wear the number 34 in his new colors and is already listed in Liga Portugal.
The amount of the purchase option has not been disclosed by Benfica, but the Portuguese press estimates it to be around 10 million euros. El Karouani quickly returns to European football, just a few weeks after leaving FC Utrecht on a free transfer to join Al-Qadsiah, with whom he did not play any official matches.
After providing 18 assists in 50 appearances with Utrecht last season, the Atlas Lion strengthens the left flank of the team coached by Marco Silva. His offensive profile will offer a new solution to the Portuguese coach, alongside Swedish player Samuel Dahl.
Upon his arrival in Lisbon, El Karouani expressed his enthusiasm and ambitions: “Benfica is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, so I didn’t need to think twice about it. I want to win trophies and have a great season.” The Moroccan is now opening a new chapter in his career at one of the most prestigious clubs in Portugal.
