Mohamed Ouahbi addressed the selection of Sofyan Amrabat and the management of his playing time. The Moroccan coach explained that the character and commitment of the midfielder were taken into account when integrating him into the squad, despite strong competition for his position.
« When making the selection, as I mentioned earlier, we sit down together with the staff. And it’s true that I was made to understand that if Sofyan Amrabat comes, he must play. If he doesn’t play, he needs to be managed, » he explained. Before calling up the player, Mohamed Ouahbi wanted to ensure his daily behavior and commitment during training.
« The only question I asked those who knew him internally was: is he working on the field and does he show it every day? They told me yes. I said to them: “Then we take him. We need him and we will need him.” »
A discussion before Brazil
The coach also revealed that he spoke with Sofyan Amrabat before the match against Brazil. The midfielder sensed that he might not start the game.
« I made it clear to him that if I took him, it was for him to help us. When? Where? I don’t know, but there would be moments when he would help us, » Mohamed Ouahbi continued.
Despite his disappointment regarding his playing time, Sofyan Amrabat reportedly maintained an impeccable attitude during training. « He was disappointed not to play, but every time, on the field, he trained hard. And that’s why he also got some playing time. »
Significant competition in midfield
Mohamed Ouahbi also mentioned the statements made by Sofyan Amrabat’s brother, who was unhappy with the player’s situation. However, the coach assures that he has not noticed any personal problem with the former Fenerbahçe player.
« I find that Sofyan Amrabat is someone with a lot of character, who confronts you and tells you things. I thought that if he didn’t say anything to me, it was just because he was disappointed about not playing much. I don’t think he has a problem with me. »
For Mohamed Ouahbi, the situation is mainly explained by the competition in midfield. Ayyoub Bouaddi, Naim El Aynaoui, Othmane El Mourabet, and other players who may soon join the national team also have strong arguments to claim a spot.
« We have a lot of competition. Honestly, it doesn’t bother me at all, » concluded the coach.
