Issa Diop experienced an evening that will long be etched in the recent history of the Moroccan national team. Facing the Netherlands in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the Moroccan defender was named Man of the Match after playing a decisive role in the qualification of the Atlas Lions, secured in a nail-biting penalty shootout.

While the Netherlands thought they had secured their qualification after Cody Gakpo opened the scoring, Morocco refused to bow down. In stoppage time, Issa Diop emerged to bring the Atlas Lions back into the match, sending both teams into extra time. A crucial goal, scored under immense pressure, which completely revitalized the Moroccan squad.

Beyond his equalizer, Diop delivered a performance full of character. Solid in duels, focused in critical moments, and decisive in the opponent’s box, the Moroccan defender embodied the spirit of a group that never stopped believing. This Man of the Match award rewards a complete performance, marked by impact, clarity, and composure.

The penalty shootout then provided another moment of extreme tension. Thanks to their mental strength, the Atlas Lions ultimately triumphed over the Oranje, winning 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. This significant qualification allows Morocco to continue its journey in this World Cup.

For Issa Diop, this evening may mark a turning point in his career with the Moroccan national team. Recently joining the squad, the defender responded on the field with a goal that means much more than just an equalizer: he kept an entire nation alive in the competition. Against the Netherlands, Issa Diop not only scored but was also recognized as one of the great symbols of this historic night for the Atlas Lions.
