Gessime Yassine becomes the youngest Moroccan scorer in World Cup history

Gessime Yassine has etched his name in the history of Moroccan football. Scoring against Haiti on the third and final day of Group C at the 2026 World Cup, the young Lion of the Atlas has become the youngest Moroccan player to score in World Cup history, at just 20 years old.

With this achievement, Gessime Yassine surpasses Youssef En-Nesyri, who scored at the age of 21 against Spain during the 2018 World Cup. This symbolic performance for the young Moroccan international now makes him the youngest scorer for the Lions of the Atlas in the history of the competition.

On the other end of the spectrum, Romain Saïss remains the oldest Moroccan scorer in World Cup history. The central defender found the back of the net against Belgium in 2022 at the age of 32, during Morocco’s historic run in Qatar.

Since the late Houmane Jarir, the first Moroccan scorer in World Cup history in 1970 against West Germany, several generations have marked the history of the Lions of the Atlas. From Maouhoub Ghazouani to Abderrazak Khairi, including Mustapha Hadji, Salaheddine Bassir, Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En-Nesyri, Zakaria Aboukhlal, and Ismael Saibari, each era has had its scorers.

With Gessime Yassine’s goal against Haiti, Morocco adds a new name to its World Cup history. Gessime has become the youngest Moroccan goalscorer in World Cup history after netting against Haiti. However, this newly established record could be broken during this tournament if 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi manages to score.

List of Moroccan scorers in the World Cup

    • Houmane Jarir (Mexico 1970) / 25 years, against West Germany
