The Black Queens secured their spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. On Saturday, July 19, in Berkane, they defeated Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw (0-0) following 120 minutes of play.

From the very first moments, both teams showed great determination. Princess Marfo nearly opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. On the other side, Lina Boussaha forced Cynthia Konlan into a brilliant save. Ghana thought they had scored in the 27th minute through Stella Nyamekye, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for an offside against Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah.

Algeria, missing their star Naïma Bouhani, tried to rely on collective play. Ghoutia Karchouni and Marine Dafeur had several chances but lacked precision in the final touch. In the second half, both teams took turns dominating without managing to convert their opportunities.

Extra time brought a few clear chances, but the nets remained untouched. The outcome was therefore decided by a penalty shootout. Ghana showed greater composure and accuracy, converting four attempts compared to only two for Algeria.

Thanks to this victory, the Black Queens will face Morocco in the semi-finals. The Atlas Lionesses will be playing at home with the support of their fans but will need to be wary of a determined and well-organized Ghana side.
