Moroccan international defender Nayef Aguerd is no longer a Real Sociedad player. The Basque club officially confirmed on Monday, July 1st, the end of the player’s loan spell, which began in the summer of 2024 after his arrival from West Ham United.
In a brief yet symbolic message posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Real Sociedad bid farewell to the Atlas Lion with the following words:
“Nayef Aguerd termina su ciclo con nosotros tras estar cedido esta temporada. Eskerrik asko eta zorte on! شكرًا وبالتوفيق”
((“Nayef Aguerd ends his time with us after spending the season on loan. Thank you very much and best of luck!”))
This message marks the official end of a successful individual season for Aguerd, who managed to establish himself as a key figure in the Basque side’s defense. No purchase option was included in the initial loan agreement, and as of now, neither an extension nor a permanent transfer offer has been announced by Real Sociedad.
Negotiations quietly resumed behind the scenes
Despite the public messaging suggesting a definitive end to the loan, several sources close to the matter indicate that the Spanish club has resumed discussions with West Ham regarding a potential permanent transfer. The renewed interest from Real Sociedad’s management coincides with the likely departure of midfielder Martin Zubimendi, whose sale could bring in over €50 million. A portion of that sum could be reinvested to secure Aguerd, with West Ham reportedly valuing the Moroccan defender at around €23 million.
However, no official communication has been made by Real Sociedad since July 1st. While negotiations are reportedly active, they remain informal at this stage.
A profile attracting attention across Europ
Aguerd’s strong season in La Liga, combined with his experience in the Premier League and with the national team, has boosted his value in the summer transfer market. Several well-known European clubs are closely monitoring his situation:
- Olympique de Marseille: The Phocéen club, qualified for the Champions League, has reportedly made Aguerd a priority. According to sources close to the matter, the sporting project appeals to the player.
- Juventus and AS Roma: The two Italian clubs are in contact with West Ham and are considering defensive reinforcements this summer.
- Atlético de Madrid: The Madrid-based club remains interested, having already tracked the player during previous transfer windows.
- Bayer Leverkusen: Under the management of Erik ten Hag, the German club sees Aguerd as a strategic reinforcement.
- Real Sociedad: Still in the running, despite the official announcement of the end of the loan.
A decision expected soon
At 29 years old, Nayef Aguerd aims to join a club competing in the Champions League. This priority could weigh heavily in the decision-making process, as West Ham appears open to a permanent transfer. The figures mentioned range between €15 million and €23 million, with several offers reportedly in the works.
According to our sources, the future of the player, who was developed at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, could be decided before the end of the week. So far, no official agreement has been reached, but the coming days will be decisive.
