On Tuesday, July 22, at the Rabat Olympic Stadium, Morocco’s national women’s team secured their place in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations final. The Atlas Lionesses won against Ghana on penalties (4-2), after a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time and extra time.

From the start of the match, the Moroccan team faced heavy pressure from the Black Queens. The Ghanaian team dominated play confidently. In the 26th minute, Stella Nyamekye opened the scoring. She capitalized on a ball poorly cleared off the post following a header from Bonsu Kyerewaa. Jorge Vilda’s players, struggling greatly, almost completely gave way before halftime.

A Moroccan comeback and a penalty shootout outcome

After the break, Morocco bounced back. More aggressive and better organized, the Lionesses equalized thanks to Sakina Ouzraoui Diki in the 55th minute. The end of the match, as well as extra time, did not allow either team to come out on top.

The decision was therefore made by a penalty shootout. The Moroccan players showed composure and converted four of their attempts. Ghana, on the other hand, only converted two of their shots.

A tough challenge for a highly anticipated rematch

In the final, Morocco will face Nigeria, who earlier in the day defeated South Africa (2-1) at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. The Super Falcons are formidable: they have won all nine finals they have played in the history of the competition.

Despite a challenging journey, the Atlas Lionesses have risen to the occasion. The revenge from 2022 is underway. The dream of a first continental title on home soil is now within reach.
