Morocco has taken a crucial step toward the 2026 World Cup by defeating Tanzania. In a match characterized by Moroccan dominance, the Lions of the Atlas made the difference in the second half after struggling against a compact defensive block for much of the game. With this victory, Morocco solidifies its position at the top of the group with 15 points from five matches.

From the very first minutes, Morocco seized control of the game, imposing a sustained tempo and multiplying offensive efforts. Brahim Diaz and Abde Ezzalzouli were particularly active, trying to destabilize the well-organized Tanzanian defense. Despite several attempts and clear possession dominance, the Lions of the Atlas lacked efficiency against a disciplined and compact Tanzanian team. Abde’s crosses and attempts by Bilal El Khannouss went unrewarded as the first half ended in a goalless draw, leaving Moroccan supporters with a sense of impatience.

The second half marked a turning point in the match. In the 49th minute, Saibari set up Abde on the flank, whose cross found El Khannouss’s head, but the Tanzanian defense scrambled to clear the danger. Moments later, Morocco finally broke the deadlock. From a well-taken corner by El Khannouss, El Yamiq’s powerful header was saved by the goalkeeper, but Nayef Aguerd sprang in to send the ball into the back of the net (50’, 1-0).

The Moroccans quickly pressed their advantage. In the 55th minute, Noussair Mazraoui, advancing toward goal, was fouled in the box, earning a penalty. Brahim Diaz stepped up to take it, delivering an unstoppable strike despite a good dive from the Tanzanian keeper (2-0). This second goal allowed the Lions of the Atlas to manage their lead with greater composure while continuing to press forward.

Walid Regragui took advantage of the lead to introduce fresh legs into his team. In the 71st minute, Abde, Saibari, and En-Nesyri made way for Azzedine Ounahi, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Soufiane Rahimi. A few minutes later, Tanzania almost reduced the deficit with a long-range shot from their number 11, but Yassine Bounou made a vital save (72’).

Despite leaving some spaces toward the end of the match, Morocco expertly controlled the situation and secured the essentials. With 15 points from five matches, the Lions of the Atlas continue their flawless run and reaffirm their status as favorites in these qualifiers.
