Lens – OM (2-1): Aguerd disappointed, but confident for the future

Olympique de Marseille suffered another defeat on Saturday night at the Bollaert Stadium, losing 2-1 to RC Lens. Despite a strong start and an opening goal from Mason Greenwood, the Marseille side eventually collapsed, conceding a penalty and then a goal from a corner.

Captain for the night, Nayef Aguerd delivered a clear and honest analysis after the match.

“I think we need to stick together. The score doesn’t reflect the game we played. We played well. We’re disappointed with the result — it came down to small details… we knew it would be tough at Lens. We showed that we’re capable of taking points away from home, but we conceded goals from a penalty and a corner. We’ll have to correct our mistakes and move forward.”

The Moroccan defender, who joined OM this summer, also made a point of highlighting the team’s spirit despite this difficult run.

“We need to be more efficient in both boxes. We started well, we controlled the game, but they were more clinical. I try to bring something extra — the coach chose me to be captain. I don’t care about the armband, I just really wanted to win this match… it’s a shame.”

With this defeat — their second in a row after the one in the Champions League against Sporting Portugal — the Marseille players will need to bounce back quickly. The next test is already set for this Wednesday at the Vélodrome, with Angers coming to town — a chance to react before heading into a busy run of fixtures.
