Moroccan left-back Souffian El Karouani delivered a memorable performance during FC Utrecht’s 4-1 victory over Sheriff Tiraspol in the UEFA Europa League. Although his outing was marred by a defensive error, he made up for it in the best possible way by becoming the driving force behind Utrecht’s attack.
The El Karouani effect began in the 46th minute, when he delivered a perfect corner kick that set up Horemans for Utrecht’s second goal. Just minutes later, the 24-year-old struck again. In the 56th minute, once more from a corner, he sent in a well-placed ball that was slightly deflected before reaching Viergever at the far post, who slotted in Utrecht’s third goal.
Still, the match wasn’t flawless for Souffian. A poor clearance from him benefited the opposing attack, allowing Sheriff Tiraspol to score their only goal of the game. But the best was yet to come. In the 89th minute, Souffian El Karouani scored a stunning fourth goal for Utrecht. After a ball recovery by Engwanda, El Karouani received the ball in midfield, controlled it brilliantly, and followed up with a left-footed strike that rocketed into the top corner — a magnificent goal that sealed Utrecht’s victory.
This victory puts the Dutch side in a strong position ahead of their match against Servette FC, who dropped down from the Champions League qualifiers. FC Utrecht is clearly aiming for a spot in the Europa League group stage.
