Comoros qualify to face Morocco after dramatic scenario

Doha, Qatar – Hamad Stadium was the stage for a suspenseful scenario with a spectacular qualification of Comoros for the FIFA Arab Cup 2025. They secured a spot in Group B, where they will face Morocco as their first opponent on Tuesday, December 2, at Khalifa Stadium.

Against Yemen, the Coelacanths delivered a match of rare dramatic intensity. Trailing 1-3 at halftime and then falling behind 2-4 in the second half, the island team seemed destined for certain elimination. However, in a stunning display of resilience, the Comorians refused to fold, orchestrating a comeback that few observers could have predicted, ultimately forcing the match into the fateful penalty shootout.

The Comorian miracle is named Zaïd Amir, who scored a decisive brace in the final moments of the match. He first reduced the deficit with a penalty in the 90’+1 minute, before sealing the equalizer at 4-4 in the 90’+4, sending the stadium into total euphoria. This fantastic comeback led both teams to the penalty shootout, where Comoros confirmed their composure by winning to secure their ticket. This victory completes the qualification picture, which also saw the Oman team overcome Somalia in penalties (0-0, tab) to take their place in the same Group B. Having secured their qualification after this wild match, Comoros will find themselves alongside favorites Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.

The schedule for Morocco, now known, will begin against the same Comoros on Tuesday, December 2. The Atlas Lions will then face the Oman team before concluding the group stage with a highly anticipated clash against Saudi Arabia.

Notably, this duel between Morocco (with its B team) and Comoros at the opening of the Arab Cup is a symbolic prelude to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, whose opening match will also feature the selections of both countries, adding an extra layer of excitement to this first encounter.
