Achraf Hakimi’s Paris Saint-Germain secured their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a thrilling encounter against Liverpool. Despite suffering a 1-0 defeat in the first leg despite dominating the match, the Parisians managed to turn things around in the return leg, ultimately winning in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Hakimi, a defensive wall on the right flank

Starting the match, Achraf Hakimi played the full 90 minutes, displaying both defensive solidity and offensive contribution. The Moroccan right-back effectively contained Liverpool’s attacks, forcing them to focus their play on the opposite wing, where the battle was just as fierce.

PSG strikes first despite Liverpool’s pressure

Liverpool started the match strongly, dominating possession and putting heavy pressure on PSG’s defense. However, it was the Parisians who struck first against the run of play. Taking advantage of an error from Ibrahima Konaté, Ousmane Dembélé equalized the aggregate score at 1-1.

With Anfield in full voice, the Reds continued to push forward, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into multiple crucial saves. PSG also had several golden opportunities to score a second goal, but they failed to capitalize before the end of regulation time.

    Extra time: Hakimi takes responsibility

As the match became increasingly tense, Luis Enrique was forced to reshuffle his team after Marquinhos was substituted. The captain’s armband was handed to Hakimi, who stepped up offensively, supporting PSG’s attacks. Despite several dangerous chances during extra time, the score remained unchanged, leading to a decisive penalty shootout.

Donnarumma the hero as PSG advances

In the high-pressure shootout, Gianluigi Donnarumma proved to be a wall, stopping multiple Liverpool attempts. Thanks to his decisive saves, PSG secured their place in the quarter-finals, winning the penalty shootout 3-1.

It was a collective achievement, marked by defensive resilience, determination, and experience, as the Parisians now set their sights on going even further in this European campaign.
