Sofyan Amrabat has responded to Mohamed Ouahbi’s statements regarding his decision to step back from the Moroccan national team. In comments made to Voetbal International, the Ajax midfielder notably refutes the idea that his choice is related to his playing time with the Atlas Lions.
“I didn’t expect it, it’s a bit strange. My decision has nothing to do with my playing time during the last World Cup,” explained the Moroccan international to the Dutch media.
Amrabat also emphasized his commitment to the national team. “I have always played for Morocco with immense pride. It is the greatest honor there is. Whether it’s 90 minutes, 20, 10, or not a single minute, I have always been ready for my teammates.”
The 30-year-old player thus rejects any personal frustration related to his status. “I have never asked for more playing time and I will never do so. In football, you have to earn it and deserve it,” he continues.
However, Amrabat prefers not to go into details about his disagreement with Mohamed Ouahbi. “This is not just about me, but the team. He is the coach, so I wish him the best, just as I wish the best for the team. I don’t like airing dirty laundry in public.”
This response comes a day after Mohamed Ouahbi’s statements, in which he asserted that there was no conflict with the Moroccan midfielder and specifically mentioned his playing time to explain his frustration. Amrabat now clearly states that his decision to no longer make himself available for the national team as long as Ouahbi remains in charge is based on other reasons, which he does not wish to disclose publicly.
