Ipswich Town suffered a defeat on Friday night at Portman Road against Liverpool (0-2) during the third round of the Premier League. Quickly overwhelmed, the Tractor Boys conceded two goals from Alexander Isak in the 6th and 9th minutes. Starting as a central defender, Issa Diop then contributed to his team’s response, which managed to avoid a heavier defeat.
In an interview with TWTD, the Moroccan international explained that he continues to progress by observing references like Virgil van Dijk. “We always learn from the best,” he stated. Diop considers the Liverpool captain to be one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history and believes that such confrontations allow him to study the movements and choices made by top-level players.
However, the 29-year-old defender did not shy away from discussing the difficulties faced by Ipswich during the opening minutes. Despite the attacking quality of the Reds, he acknowledges that his team could have defended better on both goals. Nevertheless, Diop highlights the collective response that followed: “We stayed united and reacted well.” He particularly notes that Liverpool created fewer chances after the break. Satisfied with the mental response of his teammates, the Moroccan now believes that several tactical details need to be corrected before the next match against Crystal Palace.
Having joined the club just over six weeks ago, Diop also reminds that Ipswich remains a team in development after the arrival of 14 new players this summer. Therefore, the automatic understanding cannot be immediate: “It will take time.” The defender assures that the new signings have already adapted well to the demands of the Premier League. “I am very happy here,” he added, referring to the quality of the group and the staff. Now considered one of the experienced players in the squad, he intends to advise his teammates and contribute to their development. With three points taken in three matches, Diop considers the record improvable but remains confident for the rest of the season.
