Wael Mohya made an impression in the very first official match of the season. Starting as a titular player, the young Moroccan-German midfielder played the entire match, which Borussia Mönchengladbach won against TSV Schott Mainz (5-0) this Sunday in the first round of the German Cup.
Already ahead at halftime thanks to goals from Hugo Bolin (22nd minute) and Daiki Hashioka (26th minute), Borussia extended their lead in the second half. Bolin scored a second goal in the 48th minute, followed by the fourth goal from Lukas Ullrich (61st minute). Six minutes later, Mohya capped off a quick counterattack by tapping in a pass from Franck Honorat in front of an empty net, marking the fifth goal for his team.
The 17-year-old had already shown his danger earlier in the match, both with his passes in the final third and with a curled shot that narrowly missed in the 54th minute. He even came close to scoring a second goal in stoppage time, but his attempt went just over the crossbar.
Having become last season the youngest player and then the youngest goalscorer in the history of Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga, Wael Mohya thus begins the new season with a complete performance and his first goal. This display confirms the trust placed in the young talent by Eugen Polanski, just days before the trip to Leipzig for the league’s resumption.
