Morocco could soon welcome a new promising talent. According to information from Bild, Wael Mohya is seriously considering a change of national team to represent the Lions of the Atlas.
The German media presents the situation as follows: “Entscheidung naht: DFB-Juwel Mohya vor Marokko-Wechsel,” which translates to: “The decision is approaching: DFB jewel Mohya close to joining Morocco.”
At 17 years old, the attacking midfielder from Borussia Mönchengladbach holds both Moroccan and German nationalities. He has so far represented Germany at youth levels, but the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has been working for several months to convince him to join the Moroccan national teams.
Bild notably emphasizes that Morocco’s performances at the 2026 World Cup could influence his decision. The prospect of participating in the 2030 World Cup, primarily hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, would also be a significant factor for the player, who will then be 21 years old.
Mohya had already confirmed in March that he had been in contact with the Moroccan side. However, he specified at that time that he had not yet made a definitive decision and wanted to take his time before deciding on his international future.
Regarded as one of the most promising young players at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the attacking midfielder has taken several important steps during the 2025-2026 season. His potential arrival would be an interesting boost for the Moroccan youth teams and, in the long term, for the senior team.
At this stage, Bild mentions an imminent decision and a rapprochement with Morocco, but no official announcement from the player, his club, or the FRMF has yet definitively confirmed his change of national team.
