The FIFA has appointed Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio to officiate the Round of 16 match of the 2026 World Cup between the Netherlands and Morocco, scheduled for the night from Monday to Tuesday at the Estadio Monterrey in Mexico. The match will see the Atlas Lions, who finished second in Group C, face a Dutch team that topped Group F.
Wilton Sampaio will be accompanied by his compatriots Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia, who have been designated as assistant referees. Chilean Cristian Garay will serve as the fourth official, while fellow Chilean José Retamal will take on the role of reserve assistant.
This choice comes ahead of a highly anticipated matchup between two teams that made their mark in the group stage. Morocco secured its place in the knockout rounds after finishing second in its group behind Brazil, only edged out on goal difference. Meanwhile, the Netherlands finished first in Group F, notably after their victory against Tunisia.
Wilton Sampaio is no stranger to the international scene. Having already officiated at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Brazilian referee oversaw several important matches, including those involving the Netherlands. He has also been selected to officiate the opening match of this 2026 edition between Mexico and South Africa.
This appointment adds an important element to the preparation for the Atlas Lions. Facing a forward-thinking Dutch team, the Moroccans will need to demonstrate control, discipline, and clarity in a match where every detail could count. The winner of this confrontation will continue their journey towards the Round of 16.
