Morocco secured its place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Tanzania 1-0 on Sunday, January 4, 2026, in Rabat, after a round of 16 match that was tighter than expected. For a long time, the Atlas Lions struggled against a disciplined opponent, who was well-organized and ready to capitalize on any hesitation, in a typical ‘trap’ match scenario that the coach had indeed feared before kick-off.
The breakthrough came in the 64th minute, thanks to Brahim Díaz, who scored the only goal of the match and his fourth goal in the tournament. This achievement rewarded a sharper Moroccan sequence after the break, with more rhythm in their passing and a more consistent presence in the danger zone.
However, Morocco “sweated it out” until the end. Tanzania never stopped believing, pushed hard in the final minutes, and tried to derail the end of the match, forcing the Lions to manage pressure and emotions rather than simply playing their game. In the end, the essential was secured: qualification, a clean sheet, and above all, a useful demonstration for the rest of the tournament: at this stage, it is rigor and control that prevail, not status.
