Fenerbahçe suffered a 2-1 defeat to Feyenoord in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round match. The Turkish side, managed by José Mourinho, put up a tough fight, but a late goal from the home team secured the victory for Feyenoord.
Fenerbahçe went into the second half with more control and an increased attacking intent. The persistence paid off in the 86th minute when Sofyan Amrabat leveled the score for Fenerbahçe with a powerful shot that rocketed into the net off the underside of the crossbar (86′). The Moroccan abstained from celebrating the goal, having played for Feyenoord from 2017 to 2018. His equalizer came in response to the opening goal from the Dutch side, who had taken the lead with an own goal from Mert Müldür in the 19th minute.
Despite the heroics from Amrabat, Feyenoord found a last-minute winner in stoppage time by Anis Hadj Moussa, leaving Fenerbahçe with a difficult task in the second leg. Both teams featured Moroccan players, with Amrabat and Youssef En-Nesyri (replaced by Tosun, 84′) starting for Fenerbahçe and Oussama Targhalline making an appearance as a substitute for Feyenoord (84′). The result leaves the tie finely poised for the return fixture in Istanbul.
